BIG DATA IN MEDICAL RESEARCH – HOW DATA SCIENCE HELPS FINDING THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF COMPLEX DISEASES.

Speaker: Boris Guennewig, Garvan Institute

Seminar Date: Tuesday May 10 2016, 12.00pm

Abstract: The combination of genomic sequencing techniques with statistical modeling promises to deliver insights into what causes currently incurable complex diseases, like Parkinson’s. In this talk Boris will introduce principle concepts of i) processing sequencing data in a High Performance Computing environment, and subsequent analysis on the resulting high dimensional data sets including ii) gene expression analysis, iii) co-expression networks and iv) statistical learning techniques.
