Speaker: Amin Beheshti, Lecturer and Senior Research Associate in the Service Oriented Computing Group, School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia Seminar Date: Tuesday 29 September 2015 Abstract: The ability to harness the ever increasing amounts of data will enable us to understand what is happening in the world. In this context, ‘Big Data’ is one of the biggest buzzwords around these days and it is going to impact everyone’s life. The Big Data problem can be seen as a massive number of data islands from personal, shared, social and business data. The data in these islands is getting large scale, never ending, and ever changing, arriving in batches at irregular time intervals. Examples include: the adoption of social media (e.g. Facebook for businesses), the digitalisation of business artifacts (e.g. files, documents, reports, and receipts), using sensors (to measure and track everything), and more importantly generating huge metadata (e.g. versioning, provenance, security, and privacy) for imbuing the data with additional semantics. Linking an analysing of these, potentially connected, data islands is of high interest. During this session the idea behind the massive ‘big data’ buzz was explored, Big Data Analytics challenges, and opportunities for Big Data Analytics in healthcare were discussed. A brief overview of Knowledge Graphs in the age of Big Data Analytics were also covered.
