Andreas Furche
Dr Andreas Furche has been involved in the development of financial technology start-up companies for 20 years, in Australia, the US, and Europe. As CEO of SMARTS, he led the development and growth of the globally leading market surveillance company, which was grown out of the CMCRC and acquired by NASDAQOMX in 2010. He developed the original commercialisation strategy of CMCRC in 2003, and was involved in the development of a number of other start-up businesses within CMCRC. This includes CMC-IS, Australia's leading provider of fraud and error detection in health insurance claims, of which Andreas is now Chairman.
Prior to his involvement with the development of the CMCRC and its related companies, he was a Partner in Electronic Trading Concepts, which was sold to Securenet in 2000. In the 1990s, he worked as a software developer and project manager on the development and deployment of expert systems. Andreas was also deeply involved in one of the most interesting commercial failures of the early Internet – the attempt to bring electronic cash into global circulation with DigiCash in the mid to late 1990s. David Skellern AO
Dr David Skellern worked in radioastronomy for 10 years and taught electronics at Sydney and Macquarie Universities for 16 years before coming to prominence in the IT industry through Radiata, which he co-founded in 1997.
Built on joint research done by Macquarie University and the CSIRO, the company demonstrated the world’s first chip-set implementation of the 54 Mbit/s IEEE 802.11a High-Speed WLAN standard. Radiata was sold to US giant Cisco Systems in 2001 for $565 million.
Dr Skellern joined the Board of National ICT Australia in 2003 and became its Chief Executive Officer in 2005.
Chris Beare
Chris Beare has diverse experience as an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, investment banker, chief executive, and independent director. He currently chairs two listed companies DEXUS Property Group (ASX:DXS) and FlexiGroup (ASX:FXL) and is actively involved with a range of small technology companies (Saluda Medical, Cohda Wireless, Game Changer Ventures, Pooled Energy, Significance Systems). He was previously Chairman and CEO of Radiata and a Director of Business Development at Cisco Systems after it purchased Radiata in 2001. He was a Director of SMARTS Group, and was closely involved in the re-structure of Wizard Home Loans before it was sold to GE in 2004. He was Chairman and a General Partner of Accede Capital Venture Partners in the 2000s.
Up until 2011, Chris was a Director of NICTA and Chair of their Commercialisation Committee and before that was an adviser to CSIRO in a number of capacities. Chris was an investment banker in the 90s as joint CEO of Hambros Australia and head of its corporate finance team. Prior to that he was a venture capitalist with Advent in Melbourne responsible for $100m invested in over 40 companies. In the 1980s Chris held a number of engineering and management positions at Telecom Australia culminating in the Head of Strategy.
Chris holds a BSc, BE (Hons) and PhD (Electrical) from Adelaide University and a MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Robert Lang
Dr Rob Lang is the head of the SMARTS and TradeGuard Businesses within NASDAQ and is responsible for the business and product development and delivery of the surveillance, compliance and trade risk product offerings from NASDAQ.
From 2007 to 2013, Rob has lead the technology and software development for all SMARTS products as CTO, before transitioning to the business side in 2013. Prior to joining SMARTS in January 2007, Rob spent ten years in various Technology Management roles mostly in Silicon Valley, California, producing hardware products in the computer graphics and image processing industry, most notably for Silicon Graphics and Nvidia. He specializes in technology management, product development, prototype engineering, innovation, and hiring quality technical teams.
Rob received a Phd in Computer Engineering from Newcastle University in Australia in 1996.
Peter Clare
Peter Clare is a highly experienced senior executive with a career in banking spanning more than 20 years.
Prior to his current interests in private equity, start-up technology and business consultancy and advisory work, Peter was the CEO and Managing Director of Westpac in New Zealand. He has also held Group Executive roles at Westpac Australia and St.George Bank with responsibilities for Strategy, M&A, Product, Operations, Technology, Property and Procurement. Whilst at Commonwealth Bank he led the Colonial Bank acquisition Merger and Integration Team also reporting directly to the Bank’s CEO.
His background includes Insolvency Accounting and Management Consultancy. Peter holds a UNSW Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting, Finance and Computer Information Systems) and a MGSM MBA. He is a member of the Institute of Company Directors, Governance Institute of Australia and a FCPA and FSIA.
