FRAGILE X SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH SPEAKER: MICHAEL HART, CMCRC PHD CANDIDATE, WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY.

Seminar Date: Tuesday August 2 2016, 3.00pm

Abstract: This month is Fragile X Syndrome Awareness month and CMCRC’s Michael Hart is giving a presentation on FXS from his point of view as a parent. He will also be reviewing the issues that can go wrong. Fragile X Syndrome is caused by the expansion or lengthening of the FMR1 gene on the X chromosome, known as a gene mutation. When the gene lengthens it switches off production of a protein that is involved in brain development and other functions. Symptoms include: Intellectual disability, learning difficulties and developmental delay.
