Professor Stephen Taylor, speaking on behalf of the Board of the CMCRC-SIRCA Group, today paid tribute to internationally-renowned economist Professor Mardi Dungey, who passed away on Saturday January 12 following an illness.
Professor Taylor said Mardi’s distinguished career was marked by a passion for excellence in teaching, research, and mentoring.
“Across our community of universities, students and industry, Mardi was highly respected as both an academic and as a great person. She was also an inspiring figure for large numbers of young researchers, and had a huge influence on their lives and careers,” he said.
“In honour of Mardi we are renaming our Young Researcher of Year Award as the ‘Dr Mardi Dungey Award’. In this way she will continue to inspire young researchers to pursue excellence and explore knowledge.
“She will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”
Mardi held a number of senior appointments including Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Tasmania, Adjunct Professor at Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis at ANU, and Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Financial Analysis and Policy at Cambridge University.
She was also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
Mardi, whose research expertise combined the empirical sides of finance and economics, was a world expert in the transmission of financial crises, systemic risk and the policy implications of these events.
Her expertise encompassed macroeconomic policy, banking and finance, time series econometrics, and high frequency finance.
Mr David Sharp, CEO of Group companies SIRCA and RoZetta, said Mardi had a long-standing relationship with SIRCA as a researcher and as an advisor on the SIRCA Membership & Research Committee.
“I found Mardi to be a terrific contributor to our business, providing constructive feedback on our service offering as well as providing her time and expertise to help mentor young researchers. I will miss her contribution and her wonderful positive energy,” he said.
Mardi moved to the University of Tasmania in October 2008, from a position as the Deputy Director of the Centre for Financial Analysis and Policy at the University of Cambridge.
She also held positions at ANU, La Trobe University and the RBA, and been a visitor at the BIS, IMF, Princeton, Manchester, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and Australian and New Zealand Treasuries.
